Following the grooves where the tram-rails run, Beehive queens bask, bleached by the sun Behind dusty velvet curtains, Elvis rocks on This town is all front, but its swagger has gone Musty hotel rooms line waking-dream boulevard Caf? peas are mushy but the batterings are hard Backstreets are littered with tattoo parlors and rusty estates As kids hang out in the mall playing truant with their mates It was in this crumbling shelter I first tasted bliss A weather-beaten witness to that first fateful kiss The fumbling of fingers, tripping ladders to the moon Ripping yarns and bursting zippers and coming too soon But time stops for no one, and Old Man sea Will never bring you bobbing On the waves, back home to me Metal girders corrode under jaded seaside fun Ancient timbers warp like a fairground air gun Years cling tighter round the geezer at the end of the bar As he lights another Players and orders another jar Out on a wobbly limb, Mad Jake sniffs the salty sea air Dylan plays the hurdy-gurdy with the wind in his hair Sylvia the Siren chants, ?children, come here?, As candy-floss spins out the highlight of the year And honeymoon couples, fresh out of school Click to the rhythm of the wicked slide rule And chilled by sea breezes and drowned in warm beer, See funny things happen at the end of the pier.
